Comparative Review of Literature for Post-operative Care - Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgical Type: Bone-patellar-bone & Semitendinosus Autografts

PURPOSE: The two most common autografts for ACL reconstruction (ACLR) are bone-patellar tendon- bone (BPB) and semitendinosus-gracilis (STG). There is currently no consensus on the optimal graft choice. In other words, the graft chosen for ACLR often occurs by the physician with minimal choice provided to the patient. The aim of this study is to review current literature examining the variance and differences in post-operative care, time to discharge, and milestone achievement. Further, the authors will review pre-and post-assessments for patients’ initial treatment, rehabilitation, and provide total number of cases for each surgical technique. METHODS: The authors performed a comprehensive electronic search in January 2023 using search terms “anterior cruciate ligament” OR “ACL” AND “bone patellar tendon bone graft” OR “BPB” then “anterior cruciate ligament” OR “ACL” AND “semitendinosus gracilis graft” OR “SGT”. RESULTS: The initial search identified 76 articles based on title and abstract. A secondary review and analysis of complete articles, and examination of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles were retained for this review. The findings from this review indicated similarities in patient clinical outcomes and time to recovery. Several variances in the review, such as initial rehab milestones and initial rehabilitation restrictions, were highlighted throughout the results and discussion section of this manuscript.
