Abstract

  • This paper examines a variety of challenges Americans face as they approach their retirement years. One area of concern is individuals not planning for retirement and not saving for it. Secondly is a concern Americans may be retiring too soon. The average age for retirement is age 62-63 and coupled with the increasing life spans for those reaching retirement age, this puts significant pressure on having adequate retirement funds available for the extended life of the retiree. A third challenge examined in this article is the likelihood that a bear market for stocks is looming that could wipe out funds necessary for retirement. Finally, the impact of inflation and rising medical costs are considered.
