Participants explore the unique geometry of structures such as the carbon nanotube and the buckyball. Participants will examine the patterns of carbon bonding that lead to these unusual structures by making a variety of structures (buckyballs, carbon nanotubes, fractal patterns) with everyday materials. The role of repeating structures in nature will be examined and participants will make self-assembling molecules and structures (viruses and molecular models). Virtual technologies for studying molecular composition will be shared. The beauty of fractal patterns in nature will be examined. Curricular materials will be provided.
