Today’s global environment and issues mandates a re-examination of the traditional curriculum and pedagogy (Merryfield, 2002). As nation-states become more interconnected through commerce, transportation, migration, and technology, schools an obligation to prepare students for responsible citizenship in a global age. This symposium will bring together researchers in global, intercultural, and social studies education to present and discuss current research that highlights the ways in which teachers and students perceive global citizenship. This discussion will result in the participants designing a common, collaborative research agenda aimed at researching the effects of students’ race, ethnicity, and class on their opportunity to think and act globally in school.
