Abstract
- Social studies and science share some areas of natural content overlap which can aid interdisciplinary teaching. Other aspects of the state-mandated content, however, pose difficulties in finding common ground. In order to overcome this difficulty, this article suggests that social studies and science teachers link their disciplines through concepts. The authors apply Lynn Erikson’s idea of macroconcepts to science and social studies teacher collaboration, explore the process of concept-based interdisciplinary teaching, and use example lesson plans to illustrate concept-based interdisciplinary teaching for science and social studies teachers.
