Multinomial Logit Analysis of Student Academic Dishonesty: Using the Scenario Method to Analyze Crime in the Classroom Presentation uri icon

Description

  • Results suggest that student characteristics and situational factors significantly affect the probability of cheating behavior during in-class exams. Student perceptions of the certainty and severity of punishment have a negative and significant impact on the probability of cheating behavior, as does the student’s current standing in the class, with current grade inversely related to the probability of cheating. Younger students and male students appear more likely to cheat, while students who describe themselves as ethical are less likely to cheat. Notably, students who indicate a more favorable attitude toward capitalism and unfettered markets appear significantly more likely to engage in cheating behavior.
