Authentic assessment at the graduate level: The power of reflection Academic Article uri icon

Abstract

  • This article presents a Capstone Experience designed to include a deeply reflective and comprehensive form of assessment for graduate students in the fields of language and literacy. In the semester-long engagement students are guided in the construction of a final product that can be used as both a personal and professional learning tool, as well as a means of program assessment for faculty. We provide a description of this Capstone Experience, including the framework, the expectations for students, meeting formats and schedules, components of the final product, presentation guidelines and an assessment rubric. We share students’ anecdotal comments and feedback on the assessment process, and offer several excerpts of student reflections regarding their personal strategies for successfully completing the experience. Those who may benefit from this article are graduate level faculty looking for ways to modify their current assessment in order to encourage the importance of informative reflection for practice.
