Power, Privilege, and Professional Responsibility: A Multicultural Ethics Roundtable

This 60-minute interactive roundtable examines multiculturalism and ethics through a comparative analysis of the ethical codes of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), the American Psychological Association (APA), the Canadian Sport Psychology Association (CSPA), and the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP). Although each organization articulates commitments to competence, respect for dignity, avoidance of harm, social responsibility, and justice, meaningful differences emerge in how multicultural awareness, power, advocacy, informed consent, assessment, and professional roles are operationalized across practice, mentoring, research, and teaching. Grounded in cultural praxis, the session recognizes that ethical decision-making is inseparable from sociocultural context; culture shapes values, power relations, and lived experience, requiring ongoing reflexivity and responsiveness to issues of privilege and justice in sport (e.g., Ryba et al., 2024).
