Generative AI tools are impacting almost all forms of education. But, as with most technologies, the output is only as good as the input. Learning to create effective prompts is a new skill that researchers, teachers, and students will need to master to make the most of new generative AI tools. Prompt engineering has become critical in effectively using AI’s capabilities (Liu et al., 2024). This article looks at four best practices for prompt engineering. After each of these, a sample is displayed, as one of the best ways to learn how to generate good prompts is by looking at peer examples (Lui et al., 2024). Tools to help in creating prompts will also be reviewed.
