Rationale/Purpose: This study presents an automated, cost-effective staff scheduling framework specifically applied within a youth gymnastics facility. It ensures adequate coach coverage using a cross-trained mix of part-time and full-time employees with varying skills and availability. The goal is to keep the schedule running smoothly without causing issues for the athletes, coaches, or programs.
Design/Methodology/Approach:A multi-objective, data-driven optimization model is developed to determine the ideal weekly staff schedule that carefully balances saving money with reducing the disruptions caused by reassigning coaches between programs.
FindingsThe model meets both objectives: reduces staffing costs and coach reassignments. It offers flexibility for business owners to choose their preferred level of disruption while understanding the cost impact.
Practical Implications: This model helps youth sports facility managers develop adaptable staff schedules that keep coaches and athletes satisfied, preserve program quality, maintain consistent coach and athlete relationships, and reduce the burden of manual scheduling.
Research Contribution and Originality: The study introduces a staff scheduling model tailored to the unique needs of youth sports. It enables business owners to evaluate current staffing practices and choose acceptable levels of coach reassignments while understanding the associated cost trade-offs.
