Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to investigate the required music performance assessment (MPA) repertoire lists performed by high school and middle school choral and band pro- grams in the state of North Carolina. The authors analyzed the number of pieces, compos- ers, and ethnic and gender representations on the state MPA band and choral lists. In par- ticular, the researchers focused on the diversity of composers in terms of gender and BiPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) identities. The study found a disproportionate representation of white and male composers on both the choral and wind band repertoire lists. Implications for state music education associations are discussed, particularly regard- ing the evaluation of the purpose, goals, and desired outcomes of the repertoire selected and performed at MPA events across North Carolina.
