Abstract

Popular music can mean a lot of things, so what does the
committee mean when the term ‘popular music’ is used? We
agreed popular music would ideally represent the music of
students from cultures that they know, listen, and experience
today. This understanding allows for flexibility, growth, and
change over time. Understanding, listening, evaluating, and
critically thinking about popular music and its evolution offers
exciting and new possibilities for music educators!
