Abstract
This chapter details the development of a platform for exhibiting site-specific digital artwork, called Popwalk. The initial development and continued use of this technology does not constitute a completely novel approach, but it does serve a technological and artistic niche that, at the point of inception and continuing today, has been found useful by many artists, cultural producers, and arts organizations. We developed Popwalk to be site-dependent, site- necessary; the art on the app and augmented reality function is not present, accessible, nor does it exist, unless you are on site. This chapter provides a theoretical background for this approach and places the technology and development in context of similar art and history tour apps. The chapter concludes with three short case studies demonstrating the uses of the app and the affordances such technology offers educators, scholars, artists, communities, and cultural organizations.
