Abstract
- The inclusion of popular music in music teaching and learning continues to gain momentum in American schools. Modern band has been identified as a leader in this movement, positioning itself as a catalyst for expanding music offerings in particular schools across the U.S. The author of this paper presents the guiding attributes supporting the modern band movement and suggests that a new direction for modern band may be warranted, whereby songwriting is placed at the center of its training and curriculum using two new attributes: constructivism and songwriting. Using Webster’s (2011) four tenets of constructivism, the author offers a conceptual model in support of modern band programmes where songwriting and learner-constructed experiences are central to its identity. Implications for modern band teachers and its constituents are provided in conclusion.
