Creative re-imagining of instrumental and vocal ensembles offers exciting and innovative possibilities for music teacher education. Advancements in technological interfaces and YouTube allow a diverse range of preservice music education students to create, perform, and disseminate music with musicians from around the world. Novel instrument and vocal combinations are now available in ways never before possible. Hybridized spaces are conceptualized and imagined as any combination of instruments (digital and acoustic), where musicians from diverse musical backgrounds are allowed to share, collaborate, perform, record, and learn music. Hybrid spaces encourage creativity and exploration, where musicians learn from each other, are encouraged to make mistakes, and learn music through oral/aural methods. Learner-centered pedagogy situates perfectly within these milieus. This session will inspire and motivate us to re-imagine music teacher education coursework, by providing examples of students collaborating, composing, and learning music in learner-centered hybridized music making environments. It will also provide insight into a course at Ithaca College, called “Contemporary Ensembles in Public Schools” that has been re-imagined into a learner-centered and hybridized music making space for undergraduate music education students. Evidence of successful hybridized music making and student perceptions of the course will be offered. Implications for the field of music education and suggestions for further research will be provided in conclusion.
