Conservatory schools of music tend to favor prospective students with Western-European musical backgrounds. Regrettably, this can exclude a diverse range of college students who are musicians. A vast population of undergraduate students outside the exclusive conservatory school music culture often exhibit a wide range of musicianship attributes and skills that span a range of instruments and musical genres/styles. Providing space and place for these musicians on college campuses allows for increased musical exploration and opportunities for music making in inclusive and diverse platforms where music majors and non-music majors are provided the space to analyze, create, and collaborate with various musics. The purpose of this session is to provide insight into the creation, development, and teaching of an undergraduate college course called Being Musical & Being Human: Musicianship Through Music Making Processes. This session will contextualize the course by providing an overview of the student population and their musical backgrounds. The presenters will share participant perceptions regarding their experiences and offer insights related to the objectives created for the course. The presenters of this session will showcase some sample projects and examples of student compositions. Lastly, the session will engage a discussion centered on possibilities for similar courses at other institutions.
