Music teachers embrace beliefs about creativity across a diversity of music teaching and learning contexts. These notions impact their daily decision-making, including curriculum development, classroom management, music performances, and instructional techniques. A review of literature suggested limited research exists, investigating how music teachers’ beliefs about creativity. The purpose of this preliminary research was to investigate the perceptions of creativity according to music teachers. Specifically, how they perceive and define it, support it in their classrooms, and view creative students. A researcher-developed questionnaire consisting of 24 Likert and 4 open-ended questions was distributed to a sample of music teachers in the southeastern region of the United States. Approximately 164 participants responded to the online questionnaire. These data were included in the analysis and suggest differences in opinions about creativity, how it is defined, and supported in music classrooms according to creativity literature. Implications for the field of music education and further research are discussed in conclusion.
