Abstract
- Excel skills are frequently identified as a core technology skill for accounting students. The purpose of this paper is to describe a constructivist, game-based approach to teaching a specific Excel skill useful in the accounting profession: Excel shortcuts. Using this classroom activity, students are first introduced to various Excel shortcuts across multiple class periods. After coverage of the shortcuts, students are grouped into three teams to play a Jeopardy!-style game as a class. Finally, students are introduced to programming concepts by explanation of how the game was created in Excel using Visual Basic for Applications. By using this game-based approach, students are exposed to intermediate Excel features as well as programming concepts and improve their overall understanding of technology in the accounting profession.
