Abstract
- Laura R. Logan (1879-1974) was an early 20th century visionary whose courage and foresight influenced the profession of nursing. Beginning in 1914, she championed changes in the School of Nursing and Health at the Cincinnati General Hospital to align with a liberal studies curriculum and to prepare graduates for nurse roles beyond the walls of a hospital. These curricular changes were instrumental in moving education of nurses from the hospital school to the University of Cincinnati. A new program of study, a dual diploma in nursing and Bachelor of Science degree, was created. Logan’s skills as negotiator, leader, educator, and interprofessional partner are illustrative of the courage required for contemporary nurse leaders in the chaotic, constantly changing healthcare environment today.
