Healthcare for Cancer Survivors and Families: Preparing Students through Interprofessional Education, Simulation, and the use of Standardized Patients

Background/Rationale: Interprofessional education (IPE) is increasingly of interest to healthcare disciplines as the face of healthcare changes and brings more challenges to providing the delivery of multidisciplinary services. Yet higher education sparsely offers students the opportunity to learn how to work interprofessionally despite the necessity of these skills in practice. Purpose: To implement an innovative, interprofessional applied learning experience using standardized patients (SP) and to assess the effect of this learning experience on the belief of the benefit of working collaboratively with an interprofessional team. Methods: Four students from various disciplines within CHHS [Nursing (NUR), Social Work (SW), and Exercise Science (EXS)] will be brought together to form four teams of three (1 NUR, 1 SW, and 1 EXS student). Each team will discuss a case study (SP: recently diagnosed pediatric cancer patient and her grandparents), develop a holistic plan of care, and then meet with the SP within the simulation lab to discuss the holistic plan of care. This simulation will be recorded. Prior to the experience, students participating in the simulation will complete an intention reflection to determine to learn: what they expect effective interprofessional practice to look like, what values, ethical practices and skills they think will be involved, and how the experience might impact their future career. Additionally, students will complete the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) Questionnaire before and after the simulation. The recording of the simulation will be shown to all students within the NUR and EXS class (NSG 401: Pediatrics and EXS 472: Exercise for Cancer Rehabilitation ad Survivorship) from which the four students from each discipline were selected. All students will complete the RIPLS before and after watching the simulation. Paired-samples t-tests will be used to determine if changes in scores on the RIPLS occurred as a result of watching the simulation. Results: Forthcoming. Conclusions: Forthcoming.
