2014 SHAHS Development Grant- Functional Movement Screen Grant uri icon

Abstract

  • Corrective exercise is a relatively new, growing area within the fields of exercise science, athletic training and physical therapy. Practitioners analyze basic, fundamental movement patterns and identify imbalances and maladaptive movements to determine potential injury risk. Exercises can then be prescribed to correct these patterns prior to an injury occurring. Through the proposed project, students taking Exercise Assessment and Prescription (EXS 470, approximately 50 students/semester) and Clinical IV in Athletic Training (ATR 449, approximately 15 students/Fall semester) would learn to use the FMS, be able to administer all 9 tests on a client successfully and interpret the findings. Critical thinking would be necessary to identify corresponding corrective exercises.
