Description

  • The purpose of this panel presentation is to discuss the issue of integrating computing and STEM education using problem/project-based learning to implement Common Core State Standards (CCSS) from multiple perspectives. The panel members have experience implementing large scale innovative initiatives to integrate computing and STEM education. The panel will consist of five members: one experienced mathematics and science teacher (currently is a STEM teacher educator), one mathematics educator, one computer scientist and one computer engineer. The moderator is an experienced instructional designer/technologist, a researcher in the area of learning sciences and a long time teacher educator. The panel members are knowledgeable about the issue and will bring different perspectives due to their various backgrounds and experiences and will offer their personal views after many years of working on various initiatives. The panel discussion will help the audience further clarify and evaluate their positions regarding integration of computing with STEM education and the movement toward using the power of computing, simulation and modeling technology to improve student performance and interest in the STEM area. The audience will have an opportunity to participate in the discussion as well as increasing their understanding of the positions of others.
