Access to Culturally Relevant Literature in Public School Classrooms and Libraries: A Representative Case Grant uri icon

Abstract

  • This study examines materials at one school, selected for its Title 1 status and high number of children who are demographically different from their classroom teachers by race, language background, economic level and/or other factors. The research examines the book shelves in 6 randomly selected classrooms at the school. Books will be counted and categorized according to representation of culturally relevant symbols, language and illustrations, according to predetermined criteria. Teachers will be surveyed regarding children’s engagement in classroom library with frequency of check out and requests noted. The school library shelves are included in the survey and quantitative data collection. Data from check out rates will be analyzed.
