Abstract
- Given recent efforts to return to neighborhood schools (understanding that, in many areas, school de-segregation efforts never resulted in truly integrated schools), this chapter will explore neighborhood schools within a larger historical context paying particular attention to school de-segregation as a problematic reform movement using two neighborhood schools located in Wilmington, North Carolina—Williston Senior High School, an all-Black school that closed in 1968 and D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, a middle school that re-opened in 2010 with 96% of the student population identified as African American.
