Abstract
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), which affects 5-8% of women, presents with varied symptomatology that affects women emotionally, behaviorally, cognitively, and physiologically in a negative manner during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. PMDD can lead to significant dysfunction in women’s lives with substantial decreases in overall quality of life (QOL). Many women suffer substantial decreases in QOL since symptomatology may not decrease even with some treatments. The purpose of this review was to explore the existing literature to develop a best practice model for the management and treatment of PMDD. Evidence reveals a holistic approach including lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy, is most beneficial for symptom reduction and improvement in daily functioning and quality of life.
