Abstract
- Pregnancies complicated by both obesity and gestational diabetes increase the risk of perinatal complications for both the mother and the fetus. Pregnancy complications include but are not limited to gestational hypertension, cesarean delivery, fetal macrosomia, and postpartum hemorrhage. Because of the increased maternal and fetal risks associated with maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), the development of evidence based strategies for screening, management, and timing of delivery will provide a comprehensive approach needed to optimize outcomes for both mother and baby. Thus, the aim of this review was to formulate best practice guidelines for the care of obese women during pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to reduce adverse maternal and fetal outcomes.
