Citizen Perception of Tsunami Hazard Risk in Low Probablility, High Impact Hazard Zones: Lessons from USVI and New Hanover County, North Carolina. Presentation uri icon

Description

  • Citizen knowledge about tsunami hazards varies across the many US communities with a risk. Since 2007 an international team of researchers has been working to assess community awareness of both risk and potential impact and to subsequently develop recommendations for government on warning products and community education efforts. The communities in this study have a range of tsunami risk that extends from low risk, low impact to high risk, high impact. Consequently our findings confirm that citizen and emergency management personnel have related levels of knowledge about this natural hazard and how to respond. This research demonstrates the importance of both appropriate community approaches to the likelihood of tsunami events and a clear and easily understandable set of warning products that can be applied to all communities.
