Overview
Description
In Ecuador today there are 57 volcanoes; ten of these are considered to be potentially hazardous due to their urban and peri-urban locations. Of this number 7 are closely monitored because of the combination of ongoing eruptive phases and location in close proximity to significant urban centers. One of these volcanoes, Tungurahua, experienced an eruptive cycle that has driven political, non-profit, and business sector actors to work together to respond and mitigate the risk to citizens. This paper is a case study of the Tungurahua experience and illustrates the importance of collaboration between the governmental, scientific and non-profit sectors to enhance resiliency in chronically at risk communities.
