Exploring Literacy In Our Own Backyards: Increasing Teachers’ Understanding of Literacy Access through Community Mapping Academic Article uri icon

Abstract

  • Teachers develop a greater understanding of the children when they leave their classrooms and become learners in the community. This article describes a project that involved in-service teachers in mapping exercises to catalog resources in literacy and technology in the communities surrounding their children’s homes. Both gaps in resources and unknown opportunities were found. This new awareness of their children’s literacy access outside of the school day led participants to become advocates for bi-directionally increasing school-home-community literacy access.
