Entering the School Community: Teachers Explore, Assess and Advocate for Resources
Presentation
Overview
Overview
Description
Teachers develop a greater understanding of children when they leave their classrooms and become learners in the community. This project involves both pre-service and in-service teachers as they practice action research mapping community resources. They then use this authentic experience to make changes in their family literacy curriculum and to inform their classroom teaching. This presentation gives a rationale for familiarizing oneself with the school community and shares graphics to assist with documenting the information. Examples will be shared as well as anecdotal remarks from parents, teachers and principals regarding advocacy for change in the approach to family literacy curricula.
