Space Data Integration for Water Resource Exploration in Arid Lands Presentation uri icon

Description

  • The region of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula includes some of the driest areas on Earth. Yet, its landforms kept a record of past humid climates. During wet phases, the region was green and contained numerous rivers, inland deltas and lakes. When the wet periods ended at about 5 ka ago, the region transformed into hyper-arid deserts and its original surface was covered by sand. The vast sand cover has inhibited revealing these former rivers and lakes. Here, radar and thermal images, as well as space topographic data were successfully used to unveil these sand-buried fluvial features and locate shallow groundwater accumulation.
