Abstract
- Twenty-two Weeden Island and Wakulla Check Stamped sherds were submitted for absorbed lipid residue analysis from site 8GC106 in Florida. Absorbed residues were present in all sherds to a greater or lesser degree. Five of the sherds contained small amounts of residue, two contained large but highly degraded amounts of residue, and fifteen contained abundant and fairly intact residues. residues from this site were generally distinguished by an unusually high abundance of highly unsaturated 20-carbon fatty acids (C20:4-1), abundant labdane diterpenoids, an unusually high abundance of fatty acid methyl esters in the fatty acid fractions, and the subjection of at least 7 of the 22 sherds to temperatures between 300 and 350, indicated by the formation of ketone series. Residues in the sherds generally derived from a mixture of plant and meat-ased residues, with small amounts of plant resin present in many of the sherds.
