Abstract
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is an analytical technique that allows the separation of mixtures of volatile organic compounds and the identification of each constituent compound. Due to its sensitivity, speed, versatility, inexpensiveness, and the ability to identify many different compounds in a mixture, it is a favorite instrumental technique for archaeological organic chemistry, and can be applied to analyze any substance containing volatile organic compounds are expected. It is commonly used to analyze absorbed pottery residues, visible pottery residues, organic binders and pigments in paintings and artwork, resins, sealants, and many other substances.
