Before we ever enter the rehearsal room or the design studio, many of us will collaborate in programming a season. Season selection is a charged arena — full of extraordinary possibility, but also complicated by the many needs a season must fulfill. We ask our theatre seasons, particularly in higher education, to accomplish a great deal: advancing pedagogy, supporting faculty research, earning institutional buy-in, engaging students and communities, and enabling professional development. And like all forms of collaboration, we each enter the conversation with our own experiences and expectations, which may not always align with our colleagues' needs. We also recognize the concerns around labor division among production staff, who may or may not hold decision-making power in the process.
