Abstract

  • This work continues previous research regarding complexities in comprehending and identifying sex/gender criteria in ancient musical performance. The data used to explore this area will be iconography, figurines, and texts. The focus will center on ancient Israel, but there will also be some discussion of other ancient Near Eastern cultures. The approximate chronology employed will be the Late Bronze and Iron Ages (ca. 1600-525 BCE).
