The Pen (and Oral Exam) are Mightier than the (AI) Sword Presentation uri icon

Description

  • My presentation will help us rethink and reimagine what we expect students to produce, as well as how we assess them. I will present ideas for how to design a course to avoid/limit student reliance on technology during class time, as well as create assignments in which AI cannot help students earn a better grade. I will also discuss how I try to engage students in an intentionally slower manner to help them think, write, and communicate more thoughtfully and critically, while minimizing (or eliminating) the temptation to turn to AI, especially since utilizing that tool will only minimally (at most) help students achieve a higher grade in the course. Moreover, this intentional course design accompanies what I ask students often throughout the semester (“Why are you studying for your BA or MA here at UNCW?”), something that AI can never answer for them. Finally, my presentation will grapple with the following question: “How fair is it to deny them technology and technological tools during class time when today’s undergraduates’ education has been intertwined with the digital since elementary school?”
