A je ne sais quoi kind of situation: IMC, Pop Culture, and Politics in Hypermodern Times Presentation uri icon

Description

  • This presentation discusses the integral relationship between IMC, politics, and pop culture in our hypermodern times. Gilles Lipovetsky (2005) introduced the term hypermodernity, contextualizing the phenomenon as spanning across social, cultural, and historical contexts that brings together modern individualism and the postmodernity’s fragmentation. In addition to individualism and fragmentation of narratives, in hypermodernity consumer culture is dominant. In a hypermodern world political figures become brands, pop cultural trends are further commodified, and IMC practices must capture moments at an even faster pace. From Brat Summer to “Hey Drake,” this presentation will explore key artifacts from popular culture and their intersection with our complex political climate as well as how brands have captured these moments within their integrated marketing communication strategies.
