  • 1D and 2D NMR techniques have enabled identification of a variety of compounds present in rain, including the small organic acids formic, acetic, lactic, pyruvic and succinic acids, as well as the aromatic acids phthallic and terphthallic acid. Mono and disaccharides are also present in significant quantities in rain water. Photooxidation products of isoprene, including methyl tetrols and citraconic acid are major components in summer rains. These compounds contribute significantly to the bioavailable dissolved organic carbon in rain, and the acids play a major role in the free acidity of rain. Finally, preliminary data show that DOSY can be used as a fingerprint in rainwater samples and useful tool to monitor the chemical composition of these samples
