GC/MS and CSIA Analysis of Eight Absorbed Residues and one Soil Sample from the Plum Bayou Site Report uri icon

Abstract

  • Eight pottery samples and one soil sample from Feature 6 at the Plum Bayou site were submitted for absorbed pottery residue analysis and compound-specific isotope analysis. All contained interpretable residue with good preservation. Of the archaeological residues one, Vessel 7, was interpreted as containing a small amount of maize. The other archaeological residues derived from C3 resources. Of the eight residues, two were interpreted as probably primarily animal-based. Three were interpreted as probably primarily animal-based with some plant contribution, including maize in the case of Vessel 7. One was interpreted as deriving from a mixture of resources including probably fish or shellfish, and two were interpreted as deriving from a mixture of resources with plant resources present.
