Abstract
- Most, if not all, mainstream textbooks used in collegiate-level introductory Chemistry courses will highlight chemists and physicists that have had a major impact on the topics covered in a standard curriculum. Unfortunately, textbooks tend to include, in detail, the contributions made by Caucasian males and critically important contributions made by women and non-Caucasian males are omitted or minimized. As diversity of the student population increases in many large introductory chemistry courses, it is important for students to recognize themselves to form a positive science identity aided by diverse teaching resources. This curriculum development project has built a suite of presentation materials available to the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in which the diversity of the chemists and physicists that played critical roles in the topics covered by the CHM101 curriculum matches the diversity of the student population at The University of North Carolina Wilmington.
