Abstract

This article explores the importance of counter-stories and narratives of six traditionally aged Black students as they experience sense of belonging through their social media usage at a large postsecondary Predominantly White Institution. The author will explore the importance of narrative inquiry for this study, centering the narratives through the counter-storytelling tenet of Critical Race Theory, and the impact of the virtual social environment in developing and experiencing a sense of belonging. Beyond the literature, this article will also highlight the core themes discovered through this study built from the complete narratives of study participants. In addition to exploring literature around campus environments, social media, and Black student experiences, the article will also provide tangible suggestions for institutional leaders and ideations for future research. The author will also highlight that belonging is experienced differently in different student populations and how institutions can provide meaningful support.
