This presentation’s purpose is to provide conferees with effective strategies for equipping preservice teachers with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for positive collaborations with diverse families. This session will outline research-based family involvement strategies, as well as anecdotal evidence from higher education and PreK-5 classrooms. Specifically, the presenter will describe preservice teachers’ development of family involvement activities during practicum experiences, as well as how higher education can collaborate effectively with local school systems to benefit families, children, and educators. Participants will engage in discussing opportunities and challenges for family involvement in their local areas. Further, they will determine additional strategies for preparing preservice teachers for collaborations with an increasingly diverse population.
