Using Squeak Etoys to Infuse Information Technology (USeIT)-- a NSF founded project--was designed to offer expanded Information Technology (IT) experiences to students and teachers by exploiting the Squeak Etoys media authoring tool as a simulation and modeling environment to infuse IT skills into the core STEM curriculum. Through problem-solving activities and development of Squeak Etoys modeling projects, the USeIT project aimed to (1) improve teachers’ and students’ content knowledge in STEM areas, (2) promote students’ problem solving and critical-thinking skills, and (3) assist teachers in learning to blend computer-based modeling using Squeak Etoys, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and standards-based design strategies to create learning activities for curriculum units that cultivate IT skills while enhancing student learning in STEM courses. The purpose of this paper is to report the impact of the project on the students, specifically, the change in their understanding of the key science and mathematics concepts embedded in the curriculum when constructing models of complex systems; and changes in their critical thinking skills. Challenges and lessons learned will also be discussed.
