Making Connections: Integrating Mathematics and Computer Science in the K-8 Classroom Academic Article uri icon

Abstract

  • Although formal assessments are a continuous component of education, there are also key recommendations for effective teaching practices. These emphasize high-quality, equitable instruction and ongoing professional development. Additionally, research shows that students' understanding is deepened when they can make connections between their learning experiences. This paper provides an overview of effective teaching strategies in mathematics and computer science, along with examples and findings from previous efforts to integrate the subjects. To assist local educators in integrating computer science into their mathematics curriculum, we developed professional development workshops. We present an example activity that teachers can use to help students explore geometry concepts through a technology tool. Finally, we examine the challenges and opportunities related to these integration practices.
