Narrative incongruities are narrative elements out of harmony with story logic. While often decried by commentators, narrative incongruities do not necessarily indicate an aesthetic flaw in a Hollywood narrative. Indeed, under certain circumstances, they can benefit a movie: They stimulate processes of free association and creative reasoning that can enable spectators to reconcile incongruous story information. Drawing on cognitive research in the areas of insight and humor, this talk demonstrates that narrative incongruities add variety to our cognitive input; stimulate our imaginations, curiosity and creative problem-solving capacities; and liberate our thinking from the limitations of story logic.
