The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the impact of a faculty-led mock trial simulation on the learning outcomes in baccalaureate nursing students related to nursing negligence. The mock trial was held at the end of the students’ obstetric rotation and involved a “nurse” who had overlooked signs and symptoms of preeclampsia in a laboring mother, progressing to eclampsia and a deadly eclamptic seizure. Students viewed a PowerPoint presentation introducing the concepts of nursing negligence, followed by a mock trial involving the nurse in question, the impact on the family, and the nurse herself. The students were tasked with the job of acting as the “jury” and unanimously found the nurse to be guilty of negligence. Conclusion: Students reported understanding of the elements of negligence, methods to improve nursing documentation, deviations from the standard of care with a laboring/postpartum patient, and methods to reduce their own professional nursing liability.
