It's Elementary: Field-based Experiences in the Foundations Classroom Presentation uri icon

Description

  • This paper was part of a symposium that included a series of presentations on the effects of early field experiences on pre-service teacher development to develop culturally responsive perspective in teaching. In keeping with the conference theme, our work incites the social imagination through research that tells the story of how early pre-service teachers, enrolled in foundation courses, link course content to lived experiences. Researchers gathered data each semester to study the development of pre-service teacher’s critical awareness of structural inequality and the possibilities of teaching diverse learners in an urban setting. This study analyzes qualitative data through a theoretical lens of critical consciousness to examine the development of critical perspectives among our students as they participate in site-based, field experiences in underperforming schools.
