Reaching for the Open: An Examination of Borderlands and Third Spaces In Three Educational Contexts Presentation uri icon

Description

  • This paper presentation examines the construction of borderlands or third spaces where participants engage in critical examination and transformation of marginalizing systems through dialogue and social action. Authors offer examples of three borderlands: 1) at the programmatic level with a Student Support Services program; 2) at the institutional level at an historically white women’s college; and 3) at the national level in post-authoritarian Brazil. These perspectives conceptualize third spaces and critical education as a means of understanding the processes by which dominant ideologies can be disrupted and rearranged. Goals are to expand the scope of critical education beyond the classroom; develop ways for creating and navigating these spaces; and discuss how to merge theory, practice, and praxis through such spaces.
