Transforming Payment Processes in the UNCW Library Makerspace Presentation uri icon

Description

  • The UNCW Library Makerstudio identified the need to streamline the payment process for 3D print jobs and other services offered to faculty, staff, students, and the community. This proposal outlines the development and implementation of a comprehensive payment system that expands service accessibility. Initially, charges for 3D print jobs were applied to patron accounts within the Integrated Library System (ILS), limiting the service to individuals with library accounts. Payments were processed at a separate desk using the existing Point of Sale (POS) with funds being allocated for filament purchasing and equipment maintenance. The Library ITDS department’s in-house developer created a custom application, allowing users and staff to interact asynchronously with the makerstudio while seamlessly processing payments through UNCW’s Touchnet portal. We partnered with campus Financial Systems to establish this compliant storefront. Since its launch in Spring 2025, we have add several new services including Resin printing and Laser cutting/engraving. The remaining pain point currently lies with the need to manually file daily deposit reports. We aim to further streamline the payment process by implementing a new solution that automates sending touchnet information directly to campus financial systems , enhancing overall efficiency. The proposed payment system represents a significant advancement in our ability to offer this service to all users, and improves operational efficiency.
