Abstract
- The use and design of digital technologies for the self-management of chronic diseases are increasing. Self-management systems designed without theoretically driven design principles are ineffective and inconsistent. This chapter proposes design principles based on the characteristics of the digital technologies: (1) re-programmability, (2) homogenization of data, and (3) self-referential nature. The design principles are instantiated in a diabetes mobile app and illustrated in use case diagrams. The proposed principles increase the projectability of system design principles and simplify the complexity of the problem space for ICT-enabled self-management systems.
